Don’t Start Over, Take a New Direction

March 7, 2016 by Long Pham

I haven’t been back here in a long time. It’s not for lack of motivation, but lack of time. Life becomes ever increasingly difficult, and more and more just gets piled on my plate. True, some of it is my own fault, but most of it seems like it is destiny. My life was meant to be difficult.

Starting Over

I’ve been pondering the term “starting over” for a long time now. I have come to the realization that starting over, besides being impossible, is stupid. I mean it.

Starting over would mean that you throw away all of your family and friends, your experiences, all of your knowledge, the hard-learned lessons of life; everything that makes you, you. Why would you want to start over from scratch?

Instead, wouldn’t you want to just take a new direction in life? Taking everything you have endured, and build upon it, to make life better. Isn’t that a much better option?

I know I’m just playing with semantics here, but when we’re talking about improving ourselves and making sense of who we are, it’s the attitude that counts.

What’s Happened

For the past several years, I kept my two blogs, Budget For Wealth and Phamily Man separate entities. The former was focused on personal finance, and the latter was meant to be my creative outlet. Because life happens, I didn’t have time to put forth enough effort on either one of the websites. I always had plenty of ideas and things I wanted to accomplish, but I never had the time to execute.

Because of recent changes in my life, which I will probably detail over time, I decided to take a new direction by combining the two blogs on the Phamily Man domain. If you were a reader of either blog, you may have noticed the combination of articles and the website redesign that popped up recently.

The main goal was to reduce the amount of maintenance and back-end work that I have to do, so I could focus on creating content when I had the time to do so. Additionally, the amount of ads taking over my screen while viewing other websites have been overwhelming lately – with more and more sites using pop-ups to capture email addresses, click-bait, and stories broken up over multiple pages to get ad counts up. Visually, the combined website is meant to be simple, fast, and as unobtrusive as possible.

I’m just not really that interested in all of the uber-optimization, ranking, list-building, social sharing, etc. anymore. It’s not what I want out of this blog, as I’d rather be able to express myself freely and share what is important to me, as opposed to finding an “audience.”

Where I’m Headed

I plan to continue writing about money, as it will always remain an important factor in modern day life. I’ll also continue to highlight food from places I’ve eaten at and will try to dedicate more time to exploring my personal life.

A few things that I want to focus on and talk about soon:

  • Cryptocurrency – a new hobby I picked up towards the end of 2015.
  • How I was almost diagnosed with a very serious, incurable disease.
  • How I almost lost my daughter to a fairly common illness.
  • A new career path – driven by my experiences during the last eight years.

Of course, there is so much more. If I don’t (or can’t) make the time to publish it, I feel like the opportunities to share the things that are important to me are going to dissipate. And to me, that feels like time misspent, as others can learn from my experiences, teach me how they handled their experience – or at the very least, relate to me; because I have much to learn from others and a lot of room for self improvement.
