Southern California, maybe even all of California, has been in a food truck craze ever since the Kogi BBQ Truck hit it big by combining Korean and Mexican cuisine. I admit it, I love a good kalbi taco, but I never really enjoyed the idea of waiting in line to order food made in a truck. A part of me still doesn’t, but I do like some of the creative food choices.
Every Friday, at the Best Buy in Fullerton from 5:30 pm to 9:30 pm there are a squad of food trucks that occupy the north parking lot. The trucks will vary week to week, so if you’re looking for something in particular, you should follow their Facebook Page for updates.
We didn’t know what to expect the first time we went. We figured there would be a bunch of people milling around the trucks eating. Nope, no slumming it in Orange County. These people are serious! Expect to see people sealing off parking spots with their vehicles for their picnic tables and chairs. Some complement their setup with coolers, lights, and sometimes fancy it up with table cloths.
So, the first visit, we were stuck eating sitting on the curb-side. However, our followup trips we wised up and brought TV dinner trays and lounge chairs. It really makes a big difference when you can eat comfortably. Especially when there really is no side tray on the side of the food trucks to eat off of like you would typically see on a “roach coach”.
Most of the food trucks will take credit cards with a Square reader or similar device on a cell phone. Personally, I love that option, but I do try to support them by bringing cash so they can avoid paying credit card fees. Supporting small business in a small way makes a big difference. Anyway, if you are curious about the food truck culture, or need a definitive meeting point, this is a good place to crash on Friday night.
Food Truck Squad – Fullerton
Dogzilla with Garlic Fries. The hot dog/sausage is quality stuff and you can’t beat the King’s Hawaiian Roll bun!
Dogzilla Furi Dog. This is probably the closest thing you can get to Japadog in Vancouver, Canada. Yum!
Ragin’ Cajun Half Shrimp Po’ Boy. I was looking for something else to eat, and there happened to be a lot of burger trucks this visit. Not wanting a burger, I gave this sandwich a shot. The shrimp was cooked well, but I thought it was a little bit too bready. It kind of overwhelmed the package and it’s all I tasted.
Barcelona Grilled Veggie Quesadilla. Jeannie didn’t like it. Look at the wilted salad.
Crepes Bonaparte. We got the Al Capone and HazelBerryAna. They both look alike. I thought the Al Capone was good. A nice blend of marscapone cheese and blackberries.
Bakery Truck Chocolate Chip Cookies. These are, I think, the most expensive cookies in the world. Jeannie swears by them though.
Talk to me, Goose.
